The chronology includes recurring observances, conference series and landmark mobilisation formats. It is not an exhaustive calendar; purely national events and general sustainability days without a clear climate mandate are excluded.
Abstract
This report identifies sixteen major international climate-related events and event series established between 1970 and 2025. The chronology begins with Earth Day and World Environment Day, proceeds through scientific and diplomatic institutions such as the World Climate Conferences and the UNFCCC Conferences of the Parties, and then follows the expansion of networked public action through Earth Hour, 350.org campaigns, the People’s Climate March and Fridays for Future. Recent United Nations observances focus climate attention on air, transport, clean energy and glaciers. Participation data are not directly comparable: some sources count attendees, others actions, participating countries, digital reach or cumulative movement involvement. Where organisers publish large estimates without independent audits, the figure is labelled accordingly; where no defensible global headcount exists, the report states this rather than inventing a number. For The Sunshine Find, the chronology maps the public infrastructures through which climate knowledge becomes ritual, spectacle, negotiation and collective action, while maintaining a distinction between open mass mobilisation and the covert direct-action histories documented elsewhere in the archive.
Method and source policy
Start dates, host locations, official mandates and event-scale figures were checked against United Nations bodies, intergovernmental organisations or the organisers’ own archives. Scholarly literature is used to contextualise Earth Day, transnational climate activism, youth mobilisation and participation in UN climate negotiations. Official and organiser figures are treated as primary or institutional evidence, not as peer-reviewed scholarship. “People involved” therefore reports the strongest documented scale indicator available and specifies whether it is a headcount, delegate total, number of actions, number of countries, cumulative participation or media reach. Figures reported by campaign organisations are retained only with explicit attribution and caution.

1. Reading the figures and inclusion criteria
The list distinguishes four non-equivalent measures. Attendance is a count of people physically or formally registered at an event. Participation is an organiser’s estimate of people joining dispersed activities. Event count records actions rather than individuals. Reach estimates potential exposure through media or social platforms and must not be read as attendance. A country field records the place of origin or first central edition; for United Nations observances and distributed campaigns, the entry also notes that the event is global or uses rotating hosts.
Earth Day and World Environment Day began as broad environmental observances rather than climate-only events. They are included because climate action became an explicit and recurring part of their official programmes. Events focused only indirectly on sustainability were excluded unless their establishing mandate makes a clear link to greenhouse-gas reduction, climate resilience or glacier loss.

3. Interpretive synthesis: from observance to mobilisation
The chronology records a change in the public organisation of climate knowledge. Earth Day and World Environment Day established recurring environmental calendars built around education, public assembly and media visibility. The World Climate Conferences and UNFCCC COPs translated climate science into permanent international programmes and negotiations. From 2005 onward, distributed days of action, Earth Hour and 350.org campaigns used synchronised local events, numerical targets and networked images to produce a sense of planetary participation. The People’s Climate March and Fridays for Future expanded this repertoire through coalition-building, climate justice and youth-led strike action. The newest UN days isolate key systems—air, transport, energy and glaciers—within the broader climate crisis.
For The Sunshine Find, these events are not merely dates but narrative infrastructures. They organise when and how climate change becomes publicly visible, measurable and actionable. The COP and Climate Week formats can be read beside Countdown as institutions of measurement, display and policy narration. Earth Hour and global marches connect to the Random Archive through repeatable images designed for international circulation. Fridays for Future and the Global Days of Action provide an evidence-based bridge to the ELF Timeline and other direct-action reports, but the distinction is essential: the events listed here are open, public and generally lawful forms of mobilisation, whereas the later archive examines clandestine sabotage and the political construction of “eco-terrorism”. World Day for Glaciers returns the sequence to the project’s material centre by making glacier loss an official global observance as well as a scientific and cultural archive.
