climate fiction (cli-fi)

The term “cli-fi” (climate fiction) was coined in the 2000s (specifically around 2007–2008) by activist and journalist [Dan Bloom], though the literary genre itself grew out of earlier ecological science fiction in the 1960s and gained mainstream popularity in the 2010s. Many of the references in this section are posing the question as to what extent the fiction itself can contribute to the solution of problems induced by global warming. As opposed to documentaries, these novels and stories detach themselves from the limitations of pragmatism, and propose fictional, speculative scenarios eventually enhancing the collective imagination towards what methods and strategies might have an efficient impact on avoiding the catastrophe. They could be inspiring, or on the contrary they could lead to escapism, and even denial.
