Abstract
This report maps twenty-eight photographic archives and structured image programmes documenting glaciers from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The earliest repositories grew from geographical societies, Alpine clubs, national surveys and expedition institutions; later collections developed through glaciological monitoring, polar research, digitisation and purpose-built repeat photography. Their scale ranges from small glacier-specific series to parent archives holding millions of images. Record totals are not directly comparable: some institutions count individual negatives, prints and digital files, while others publish only catalogue records or the number of glacier series. The oldest verified glacier image identified here dates to 1857 in the NSIDC aggregation, while several repositories contain broader photographic material from the 1840s or 1850s. Online access is widespread but usually partial. These archives are not neutral stores: changing metadata, selection, loss, digitisation and repeated viewpoints shape what glacier change can be seen and measured. Within The Sunshine Find, they connect expeditionary and panoramic looking to scientific evidence, climate communication and the contemporary archive as an active cultural technology.

Institutional webpages, catalogues, collection guides and official data-user documentation provide establishment dates, governance, record totals, named collections and access conditions. These figures are treated as primary/institutional evidence rather than peer-reviewed scholarship. Scholarly works are used to assess the history, scientific uses and interpretive limits of glacier photography. “Estimated number of records” reproduces the most recent defensible published figure; when a photograph-only count is unavailable, the report states “not published” or identifies the broader parent-archive total. “Oldest photograph” distinguishes a verified dated glacier image from the date range of a broader photographic collection. No absence of a published figure is converted into a claim that the record does not exist.

Archive statistics are heterogeneous. A “record” may mean a glass negative, print, transparency, album, born-digital file, catalogue entry or repeated viewpoint. Parent repositories often hold many non-glacier images, while dedicated projects count only glacier photographs or pairs. The entries therefore retain each institution’s published unit and avoid aggregating them into a misleading global total. Establishment dates follow the archive’s responsible institution unless the photographic programme has a distinct launch year. Entries are clearly delimited in compact field tables; unpublished or uncertain values are marked directly.

3. Interpretive synthesis: from expedition record to climate evidence
The chronology shows three overlapping institutional phases. First, geographical societies, Alpine clubs, national surveys and expedition archives collected photographs as evidence of discovery, route-making, territorial knowledge and scenic possession. In these collections the glacier was at once obstacle, spectacle, survey surface and emblem of remoteness. Their images belong to the same historical infrastructure as panoramic tourism: cameras, railways, mapped paths, mountain huts and colonial expeditions organised distant landscapes for controlled viewing.
Second, twentieth-century glaciological and polar institutions converted photographs into repeatable observations. Fixed viewpoints, annual terminus records, aerial surveys and expedition series extended environmental baselines beyond instrumental and satellite eras. Yet the archive is never complete. Wars destroyed collections; captions and glacier names changed; institutions counted materials differently; and images remained invisible until cataloguing or digitisation. The scientific value of a photograph depends on preservation, metadata, location, date and the possibility of recovering its camera position.
Third, digital aggregations and art–science projects transformed archived photographs into public climate narratives. NSIDC, Mountain Legacy, Extreme Ice Survey and On the Trail of the Glaciers make change legible through search interfaces, geolocation, time-lapse and before-and-after pairs. These formats are powerful but selective: they privilege dramatic recession and stable viewpoints, while slower hydrological, ecological and social consequences may remain outside the frame.
For The Sunshine Find, the archives provide an evidence-based bridge between the installation’s early concern with panoramic looking and its later concern with climate discourse and action. They relate directly to Expedition Artist and Glacier Express through expeditionary and touristic visual regimes; to Memory and The Random Archive through the politics of storage, metadata and selection; and to glacial archaeology because photographs can become historical strata that are reactivated when ice, landscapes and institutions change. The project’s parafictional layer should remain distinct from these verified archival histories.
